A historic former Methodist chapel in the Yorkshire Dales National Park is to be auctioned this month with a guide price of just £28,000.

The grade II listed chapel in Garsdale, near Sedbergh, dates from 1841 and will feature in the upcoming live -stream auction held by BTG Eddisons Property Auctions on 28 May.

Built from coursed sandstone rubble with a stone slate roof, the 538 sq ft former Primitive Methodist chapel still contains many of its original features, including simple wood-panelled pews and a raised pulpit.

Auctioneers say the property requires renovation and could be suitable for a variety of future uses including residential accommodation, subject to planning consent.

Christopher Theocharides, senior commercial surveyor at BTG Eddisons Property Auctions said: “Former chapels and other historic buildings like this often generate interest at auction because they offer buyers something a bit different from standard residential or development opportunities.

“This historic property does require renovation, but it has clear potential for a range of new uses, and its low guide price and undisputed charm mark it out as a potential bargain and we are expecting lots of interest.”

He added: “The location is another major draw, with rugged and beautiful Garsdale offering access to mile after mile of some of the most attractive countryside in the north of England.”

Located in Garsdale Valley, known as a home to large numbers of red squirrels, the chapel is close to good road links between Cumbria, North Yorkshire and the Lake District.

The nearby market towns of Hawes and Sedbergh are both around eight miles away, with shops, cafés, pubs, schools and other amenities, while Garsdale Head railway station on the Settle-Carlisle line is just two miles from the chapel.

The surrounding area is hugely popular with walkers and other visitors, with direct access to footpaths and cycle routes including the 200-mile Pennine Bridleway.
