A historic former Methodist chapel in the village of Worthington near Ashby-de-la-Zouch is set to go up for auction this month, with planning consent for conversion to a single home - and a £79,000 guide price.

The Grade II-listed chapel will feature in the next live stream auction held by BTG Eddisons Property Auctions on 26 February.

BTG Eddisons Property Auctions is the new name for regional auction businesses Pugh, SDL Property Auctions and Mark Jenkinson, which have come together to operate as a single national brand.

Planning consent has been granted to convert the Worthington chapel into a one-bedroom home, featuring a large mezzanine sleeping area above an open plan living, kitchen and dining space.

Built in 1820 to seat 100 people in the main chapel and a further 25 in the raised gallery, the building is one of the earliest examples of a Primitive Methodist chapel in the area. After the early congregation dwindled, it was gifted to the Wesleyan Methodists, who sustained a larger congregation through the 19th and 20th centuries. In the 1950s, it was a vibrant village hub, hosting regular Sunday schools for up to 60 local children, and more recently has been used as a community centre by the parish council.

Andrew Parker, partner and auctioneer at BTG Eddisons Property Auctions, said: “This is a rare chance to purchase a building that has planning permission for residential conversion as well as a rich historical and cultural backstory.”

He added, “Worthington is a peaceful village with good amenities and surrounded by rolling countryside. Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Coalville are both a short drive away for more shops and leisure facilities. With Leicester, Birmingham and Derby all within commuting distance, plus nearby train stations, the M1 and East Midlands Airport within easy reach, it’s perfect for anyone seeking a well-connected village lifestyle.”
